What student say

What student say

Here’s what our happy students had to say about our services:

Throughout my 10 years of learning from Suman Kaku, I have not only grown to be an excellent singer and musician, but music has helped me to be positive and patient with life. Kaku taught me how to appreciate the various sounds of music and has given me limitless opportunities to perform and show my talent. Over the span of time, Kaku has become more than just a teacher; he is also my best friend.

Ankita Sarkar

Learning from Sumanji has been an unbelievable journey. Sumanji’s teaching has been very methodical. Classes nowadays are truly amazing. No notes but just be guided by techniques of improvisation which varies from Raga to Raga, build the confidence to meet the taal and just enjoy and really feel the soul of the raga. In a typical class, there is always some element of Alap, Jor or Jhalla along with the composition with the intent to empower one to create, create and create.

Dinkar Patel

I have enjoyed connecting, via the lessons, with classical music, which is part of my cultural make-up. I still have miles to go, but I am grateful for the experience. I am also grateful for the positive attitude and the patience with which my teacher, Suman Laha (“Sir”) has worked with me, while seeking to build a sense of community among the students.

Rafiq Dossani

‘A music teacher helps their students find the song in their heart, the beat in their feet and a passion for life.’ – I started taking music lessons (Vocal) from Sri Suman Laha at the age of 5. Sri Suman Ji is very adaptive, accommodative and patient to infuse Indian classical music in me at such a young age. He always inspires and reaches beyond regular practices.

Samriddho Bhowal

I love singing class because I love singing and listening to songs. I am always so excited to see Suman Uncle on Saturdays for my class. In class he teaches me ragas and Rabindra Sangeet. He taught me some of my favorite Rabindra Sangeet. He also sings very beautifully. I also like the fact that Suman Uncle’s favorite breakfast is my favorite too!

Niranjana Sarkar

01. History

The Indian Musical Instruments are an indispensable part of our Indian culture since ancient times and also associated with Gods & Goddesses as in Krishna with his flute, Devi Saraswati’s Veena, Shiva’s Damru and Narada’s Tanpura. The journey of Indian Classical Musical Instruments begins long before the ages of Vedas, and Epics.

02. Material

Historically, wood, bone, animal hides, and reeds have been popular choices for Indian Classical Musical instruments. Dried and hollowed gourds are also used in many instruments.

03. Acoustic

Indian Classical Musical instruments are acoustic in nature, solely or primarily using the instruments to produce sound through acoustic means, as opposed to any electric or electronic means.

04. Sympathetic strings

Indian Classical Musical instruments are characterized by the presence of numerous sympathetic strings (taraf). These strings are tuned to resonate with the different notes in the raga, so as notes are played on the main strings, their corresponding tarafs will resonate, creating a bright sound.

Indian Classical Music instruments are individually hand carved and assembled.

06. Unique qualities

Indian music offers a window not only to a musical tradition, but also to an ancient and rich culture. Within the Indian music’s melodies, rhythms, and improvisational nature are thousands of years of oral tradition and a deep sense of spirituality that inspires many aspects of life.
